Awesome compilation of the available live songs from Ryan Adams & The Cardinals forthcoming III/IV, due out next week on the 14th. I'd like to thank darkrendar for putting this together.

Let me clear a couple of things up: 1) "Cemetery Hill" will be an iTunes bonus track, it is NOT on III/IV. 2) Another version of "Typecast" finishes the compilation off instead of "Kill The Lights," the actual last track on the record. darkrendar thought this fit well and I agree.

"A compilation of live & soundcheck recordings of songs from the upcoming album III/IV. Most of these are Bedhead 6 sourced. Thanks a lot to John Carlin and Joel Swaney for taping, mastering & sharing these beautifull tunes. All tracks are soundboard sourced. Track 12 is not on III/IV, but is another unreleased song from Bedhead 6 Disc 5 I found very fitting and named from what might be the chorus. Edits made with Audacity.

Hot off the press. Unreleased tracks sent via email by Pax Am. "Darkness" and "The Blue Canoe" do not appear on the upcoming III/IV but I certainly wouldn't mind if we got a few songs like this odd couple. "Darkness" sounds like something he could have recorded with The Pinkhearts (as of now I'm particularly fond of this tune) and "The Blue Canoe" is a Ramones type quick punk song that sort of drones you in and by the end it's hard to tell if that's even Ryan singing. Listen to them below, download them via SoundCloud or check out the new "Multiload" uploading service I'm testing out. I upload it to one place, it uploads it to 7 places. One of my favorite Ryan Adams shows in existence. The last few days have been very heavy on the Ryan Adams listening. First Ryan Adams home page went down and then came back up as a redirect to Adams label, Pax Am Records and information on the upcoming Cardinals III/IV, a record he and the Cardinals recorded in 2007. Then we got some rehearsal footage of what I hope is "The Ryan Adams Band" playing "Oh My Sweet Carolina" at the Judd Apatow hosted "I Found This Funny" concert benefiting 826LA. And then I discovered the rehearsal jams on the new website yesterday (I have no idea how I missed the previous Friday), further catapulting my desire for some classic Cards' tunes. The following is an excerpt from PaxAmRecords.com:

"Hey there Music Fans, Bongo the Snowman here.... GOOD MORNING!"

These downloads are some tracks recorded on the set-up day of the III/IV / Easy Tiger sessions. The band is caught here going though some riffs and just outright jamming with some room mic's on.

A few of these became songs on III/IV and there is even a riff that was once a song called "Closure" that blew and eventually became "You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Ghost)" which is a worldwide smash for Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, and is the theme song for the Sub-National Natural Grass Level Football Association, the world renowned English Football team that lives in a cloud pattern in the sky in Ryan's "day-time mind". There is a tree growing through it.

To the best of anyones memory, the personnel on these jam sessions is Ryan & Neal on guitar, Brad on drums, and Jon "The Slyder" Graboff on bass (yes, he even kick ass on bass!)...

Ryan Adams Tomorrow starts the first day of two weeks of recording a new solo album. The songs are based around my acoustic with some stark drums/bass/piano in there. anI'm keeping these recordings simple......THEN in two weeks I am off to NYC to record part two of the crazy NYC sessions I started last month by accident. What started as a weekend studio hang with Johnny and Tom Schick turned into some kind of Smiths/Simple Minds/Love Is Hell throw-back and just way too much fun to not finish. I'm not much for Weezer but I love me some Ryan Adams. Apparently Weezer front man Rivers Cuomo told MTV "I just wrote a song with Ryan Adams. Not Bryan, Ryan. It's a very stirring and emotional and powerful Weezer song. He was really inspiring to work with. ... He has a lot of wild and crazy energy. It's gonna be on the Weezer record. He plays lead guitar on it, but it will be on the Weezer record, for sure."

Hopefully we get some nasty guitar work from Mr. David Ryan Adams on this.

How I miss this man. For those of you that haven't heard, Mr. David Ryan Adams wrote 11 new songs after attending Ronnie Dio's funeral and in his Facebook post he mentioned that he is "excited again." What does that mean for us? No idea really, it's kind of a tease actually. He knows there are a lot of fans out there waiting for him to release something, give us some sort of actual news or a snippet of actual Ryan Adams music (NOT Orion), so telling us he has some new songs and not giving us a taste hurts a little. I mean, I get it, this is just a rant from a frustrated fan.

Anyways, enjoy Black Clouds, it's a compilation of various sessions and live shows. There is a lot of excellent music on this compilation guys. You have to love the original mix of the song "Rock N' Roll" and we also get the only live version of "English Girls Approximately."

This is another treasure from Kyle V., thanks again man, you are a true gentleman.

Tracks 2-6 - The Bug Sessions, possibly recorded during 1998 or 1999.
Tracks 7-12 - Sessions recorded in Hoboken, New Jersey, possibly during 1998 or 1999.
Tracks 13-16 -Heartbreaker sessions.

Tracks 1-12 have previous circulated as the Fucker Demos; the last four tracks were found on an alternate release of this boot (Fucker Version 2). Hence the Complete Fucker.

Ryan Adams "Orion" Metal Project Gets Artwork, Rough Time Fram (again)

Remember that so-called “legit metal record,” ORION, which Ryan Adams announced and previewed back in March? We have a few updates (via his FB page): Despite his apology “for the sheer metalness of ‘Electro-Snake’,” Adams is backtracking on the label: “I am not saying it’s ‘metal’ anymore - just really really fast country with screaming and crap.” And we believe him, but that said, the newly-unveiled “bio-robotic-spider” artwork sure looks like a metal album and was, in fact, created by a real live heavy metal drummer.

Percussionist/drummer Michel Langevin, aka “Away” of Voivod (which also features ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted) designed the intense gold, District 9-esque foldout shown above. Adams also teased us with an indecipherable photo containing the full tracklist. (My image manipulation software dates back to the Clinton administration, so perhaps someone else can focus those song titles!)
Finally, we have an ETA for this beast: “about two weeks.”

Ryan Adams super-fans have been following him on his Internet adventures for quite some time now, so it’s been interesting to see him jump to Facebook over the last few months as his main source of communication. Ol’ DRA has been dropping some serious hints on his official page lately — about a new album, an old album and even a possible tour as he gets his bearings back after taking time off due to tinnitus and Ménière’s disease. (And marriage. And book-writing. And art shows.)

Given that Ryan has (finally!) been releasing new material lately, including the upcoming “metal” album, Orion, through his own Pax-Am label and seems to be done with Lost Highway and the major label system, one can only hope this means our hero might actually, honestly, be working on the mythical box set we’ve been waiting for since 2004 or so. Chris "Space Wolf" Feinstein Passes Away

Cardinals bassist Chris Feinstein has passed away at his Manhattan home. He was 42.

Feinstein, endearingly known by the awesome nickname of Spacewolf by bandmates and fans alike, recorded and toured as a member of Ryan Adams & the Cardinals for their last two full-length albums, Easy Tiger and Cardinology. His discography also includes numerous songwriting credits for Santigold’s then-eponymous album Santogold, and bass performance on Albert Hammond, Jr.’s song “Scared” from his solo album, Yours to Keep.

Most recently, Feinstein and fellow Cardinals Jon Graboff, Brad Pemberton, and Neal Casal recorded and performed with New Zealand-born singer/songwriter Gin Wigmore.

All three surviving Cardinals members have posted reactions to this sad news online, including a series of photographs on guitarist Neal Casal’s blog and drummer Brad Pemberton’s Facebook message: “This is the saddest day of my life. I lost my best friend today…things will never be quite the same.” Matthew Ryan a friend and former collaborator with Feinstein also posted a tribute on YouTube earlier today.

Though Feinstein’s family recently confirmed the story, as well, there are few details about his untimely death available at the moment. If/when important info comes to light, we will update this post accordingly.

Nice trio of shows from Ryan Adams & The Cardinals. My buddy sent me a low quality YouTube video of "Harder Now That It's Over" from the 12-5 show and Ryan played such a sweet solo on that track (around 3 minutes in) I had to see if possibly there were some soundboard copies of this show. While I haven't come across a soundboard yet, there are some great audience recordings. The quality is legit, just needs to be turned up a bit here and there. And yes, that is Norah Jones on the cover. She did "Dear John" with Ryan night dos.

New Norah Jones Album w/ Ryan Adams Collaboration

Multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Norah Jones will release her fourth studio album on Blue Note Records this November. Jones wrote nearly all of the songs in the past two years since completing tours in support of her 2007 global chart-topping, U.S. double-platinum album Not Too Late.

Beloved by fans for her sultry vocals and jazz-informed, piano-driven pop songwriting, Jones has taken a new direction on the as-yet-untitled album, seeing it as a chance to experiment with different sounds and an opportunity to work with a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, and Modest Mouse among others. Jones also enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River's Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partner Jesse Harris.

"I knew I wanted to try some different things on this album," Jones says. "I'd been playing with the same musicians for a long time. We're all still friendly and I hope we play together again, but it felt like a good time to work with new people and experiment with different sounds. As far as a producer, I wanted someone who could take me out of my comfort zone and find the right musicians to capture what I wanted to do with this collection of songs. I got in touch with Jacquire initially because he engineered one of my favorite records of all time, Tom Waits' Mule Variations. He was really eager to do it and we got along really well, which was important."

King helped Jones put together a new group of musicians to perform on the album, including drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer). Jones and King tailored the songs to the musicians' strengths. "I think the record sounds different due to the variety of musicians we used," Jones says, "I knew I wanted to play with grooves more than I have on previous albums. Some of these new songs lent themselves to having driving rhythms underneath."

Another noticeable change on Jones' upcoming album is that she plays mostly guitar. "I actually write more on guitar than I do on piano," she says. "It just felt more natural for me to play it on these songs."

Since coming on the scene in 2002, Jones has sold a collective 36 million albums worldwide. Her three studio albums, 2002's eight-time Grammy Award-winning Come Away With Me, 2004's Feels Like Home, and 2007's Not Too Late have each topped the Billboard top 200 album charts in the U.S. and gone to No. 1 around the world. All three have been certified multi-platinum, while Come Away With Me has been certified diamond. Since 2007, Jones has collaborated with a number of artists, including Herbie Hancock, Talib Kweli, Willie Nelson, Q-Tip, Irma Thomas, and Andy Samberg's comedy troupe The Lonely Island. She has also contributed to various soundtracks, including Ken Burns' The War, Ethan Hawke's The Hottest State, and Wong Kar-wai's My Blueberry Nights, as well as the Fats Domino tribute album Goin' Home. In 2007, Jones starred opposite Jude Law in My Blueberry Nights and made a cameo in this year's season finale of 30 Rock. Also this year, Jones was featured as a flagship artist on Apple's GarageBand, presenting a tutorial on how to perform her song "Thinking About You."

Mandy Moore's Simple Wedding Has Tears, Romance

Forget the trappings of show business. All Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams needed for the perfect wedding were a tiny old brick church, a pastor they just met, a pair of silver bands and each other.

"She was thrilled to be getting married. She was giddy but not in a childish way. She was obviously so happy," Pastor Steve Schulte, who married the couple this week at Whitefield Chapel at Bethesda Home for Boys on the outskirts of Savannah, Ga., tells PEOPLE exclusively.

The couple, who just got engaged last month, arranged for a last-minute ceremony, with one of their reps calling Schulte just the day before, saying a judge wasn't available and asking if the pastor could officiate. "I thought it was either somebody famous or somebody really bad," says Schulte, who agreed to the job, bringing along only a friend, wedding planner Chad Baker – and that was because they had another wedding event later in the day.

Casual Dress

A little after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, a black town car pulled up to the church on the breathtakingly beautiful grounds with blooming azaleas, dogwood trees, giant old live oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Out stepped Moore and Adams and two other men.

The couple dressed down: Moore, 24, wore a cream-colored, lacy tea-length dress and flat sandals, and Adams, 34, had on tight skinny jeans, a T-shirt with sport coat and sneakers. Schulte greeted them, and even when he heard their names, he didn't know who they were.

Only Moore, Adams and Schulte went inside the brick chapel with stained-glass windows and about a dozen wooden pews and a center aisle. (Baker stayed out in Schulte's car.)

In the eight-minute ceremony, the couple held hands and faced each other as they exchanged silver rings purchased from a local jeweler. Tears welled in Moore's eyes and her voice quivered as she took Adams to be her husband.

"I now pronounce you husband and wife," Schulte said, and the couple kissed. After the pastor congratulated them, he shook Adams's hand and hugged Moore.

As the couple walked out of the church, Adams turned and took Moore's face in both of his hands and gave her another kiss. They then walked to a little footbridge near the chapel where they hugged and kissed.

"It was so romantic. It was awesome," says Baker. "I just can't stress how happy they seemed."

Alright, sorry for the delay, here goes:

We got into Columbia around 5 PM, doors opened at 7:30, show started at 8:30. We hung out at a few bars getting ready for the show. We got to the theater and all they served was beer and wine and no drinks were allowed in the seating area, so that was a bummer, but, we did get signed copies (softback) of Infinity Blues for $30 so that's cool. We had awesome seats, 2nd row right of center (Neal's side). The show opened with I See Monsters, they sounded great and I really did think it was going to be an amazing night. Well after about 4 tunes Ryan started talking way too much and the crowd was starting to get really annoying. Some asshole kept yelling out "Damn Sam" and people were yelling out a bunch of other Heartbreaker requests. After a long time of that frat boy douche bag yelling out DS I yelled "Let him play what he wants, shut the fuck up!" and then I leaned to my buddy Matt and said "If I Ryan plays DS, I'll look like an ass." Well, sure enough, The Cards improved Damn Sam, it was pretty good actually, and totally unexpected, since when does the diva that is Ryan Adams take requests? Afte he played it someone else yelled a HB request and he said to the crowd "No really, it was a miracle that happened." But that was the gist of the 17 song night, very disappointing. I guess they only played 16 songs at the Uptown in Kansas City, MO the following night, ridiculous. It was not all bad though, they sounded good for the most part, they just didn't play much and talked way too much. Peaceful Valley was pretty unique and watching Ryan throughout that song was a treat man, he was kind of staying back in this crouched position and he was fucking jamming man, it was awesome to see. Ryan is really becoming an amazingly solid guitar player and his tone and style are sick. And while he was talking too much, most of what he said was very funny, he seems to have a genuine sense of humor. After the show, stinging a bit from a short set list and no encore, we found a bar that was $10 all you can drink, which seemed like an appropriate way to end our time in Columbia.

I really can't wait for the show to surface, I spoke to 2 tapers at the show and they said they were going to get it up, hopefully soon. Those guys rule.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately guys. Once things slow down for myself (next few weeks) I will have more time to devote to the blog.

Ryan's voice sounds great and this Peaceful Valley is rockin. The show got cut short, here is a little recap/explanation:

Man that was frustrating. I was really getting into the show and then it all ended so unexpectedly 77 mins into it. Just last night I was bagging out Noel Gallagher, who I'd seen at the same venue a couple of years ago, because his gig was more than $1/minute (he played about a 65 min set for $75). Well tonight's show came damn close to repeating that feat.

The crowd was fine. Not sold-out, but still pretty packed. Someone yelled out a request to turn up the slide guitar, which Ryan mocked him about, but sound-wise the mix sounded awesome - much better than the previous night (which was still very good).

As reidca mentioned the only 'obvious' indication that there was a problem was Ryan pointing at his IEM and gesticulating and then shaking his head in obvious frustration - this happened a couple of times. Then he said something along the lines of 'some nights feel like the bad news bears, others like the worse news bears...tonight feels like the no news bears'...then they played maybe one more song and bid everyone good night

me- 34-a non smoker and happy, for the first time in my life.. i am excited to finish this wonderful time i have had with the cardinals and whatever new adventures may come after march. atlanta will be my last venture with the band and i am grateful for the time we have had and maybe someday we will have more stories to tell together. i am however ready for quieter times as i think it is very evident i am struggling with some balance and hearing issues.

also, no drama or anything but i am okay to step back from all of this right now and i think i did enough manic blogging when i felt alone and isolated during the last few years of travel. these last few years were the hardest i can remember and the most rewarding but i have loved ones to care for now and i am lucky i have been given a chance to turn around and see just what i am capable of as a friend and as someone who is not gone forever every year- it rendered me incapable of things i needed to be to myself and others- and my schedule sometimes never ended when the shows did- and some of that was my doing. and i lost someone i loved, and i lost myself.

that changed. i got to know just who i am in this little spell of time here recently. and change is the nature of the world and i naturally embrace that.

i won’t be blogging here anymore either- but not for effect- it just is not being kind to myself- i need a life that is mine- i need to grow up and grow in to who i have subtly been working back towards since i stopped all that nonsense and i know also no matter what i choose to do in the music world, because i chose to do things my way and never lie i will always be viewed as an “asshole” ( i hear and have seen things in the past) and i am not, and i know the truth and i know who i am.

also it is kind of ridiculous to blog as i am a musician and anything i say here just gets reprinted at some point out of context. i say NOT FAIR but it doesn’t matter what i say anymore or what is fair anymore really does it- the 21st century media has it’s own rules about what is true and what is not. it is not a life- not one i want to live anyway and i don’t really care to participate in narcissistic over-indulgent behavior anymore- that was never my intention- i just wanted to fight for my right to make music and to be given the benefit of the doubt. now, because i have stood up for myself and fought for myself i am labeled all kinds of awful things. well, i will walk away now and it will not matter what anyone say’s. there are other things i can do in this life, other ways to be creative and to try and help others and be expressive without being demonized for attempting to gain the same things any other human being desires- love- friendship- understanding- and being able to express yourself without constant fear of being mistreated for speaking up

i have friends to make, brand new books coming (two of em’ not counting that one already printed and on it’s way out there and i LOVE writing….yay!) and a whole lot of living and learning to do.

i am excited to step away. i lost more than anyone will ever know (hearing, someone i loved, my sense of dignity, a never ending losing battle with stage fright and now my hearing and balance due to an inner ear issue- people accusing me of not being sober when i am suffering tremendous pain and nausea from my inner ear symptoms- people accusing me of theft (THEFT- ….awful) and this is not much of a life, not glamorous like those ridiculous video’s a long time ago television played and no it is not monetarily as rewarding as people would like you to believe and yes, it is soul destroying. especially when you spend your life trying to write about the really difficult stuff and you stand there losing your way and people yell at you like you were in a circus. when it was your dream to matter and you realize one day, it never mattered- i mean, i am a punch-line and a footnote in what is worse to yell at someone besides “free-bird”. i mean, i lost. and it’s okay because i seriously snuck some pretty neat idea’s in there in the work when i was making those mistakes or they were being made by others. this business is no science.

andf you know, whatever this is- it’s not my dream. and it is a punishing thing to endure when you are getting worse and worse- it’s not my dream, my dream was to try and tap into that energy i saw watching Minutemen vcr tapes when i was just a little shit in NC of mike watt’s crazy shaking leg and his electric fingers- or how sonic youth droned into beautiful clouds those guitars shaking, kim and steve rattling the pulsing lines into feverish thudding imaginary subway cars racing through my heart- and how it felt to just let go and static up a riff and find the sweet spot- but getting yelled at for just being a songwriter- to be called so many horrid things because i chose to love music so much, and also to look for peace and balance in my life- that is not kindness and just not my thing. at least not now.

and i loved somebody. and i let others decided if that was okay and that was wrong and i was wrong and no one should deny themselves or others love or understanding because people don’t get it. that was an awful mistake. i always make big mistakes. it’s like i let myself learn that because that was a role, a niche’ i filled that make sense to a loud voice of strangers who would never really play a real part in my life.

never become that if you choose this path- if you go this route with your art. never listen to those loud dissatisfied bystanders who only want to see you fail because that will be entertaining for that moment. hold fast to your dreams, hold faster to your heart and never step out of the light of that love that made you whole. i did. and i know better now. and better late than never i suppose.

but i am okay now. i see a peaceful way to better days now. i am healing. and most importantly i feel loved and i have learned to treat myself with that same curiosity and lover that i have been lucky enough to feel and to learn to let guide my life. love is the great teacher and i am happy to be learning now. happy to be listening to that over this never ending painful ringing. this is the great lesson of my life. for once i want to be dignified in my study and in one place long enough to hear and understand without my pride or my lack of faith in myself leading me further away from things i need to know once and for all.

this is the real work now. the rest is something else entirely.

quitting smoking was a good step and i am happy i also am just now beginning to understand how important it is i take better care of myself in every way right now. hell i am even beginning to sleep a little and i can feel the things good and bad that i did not have time to feel when i was running towards a new oblivion of work, hoping somehow someday what i did would be accepted and maybe that would make me feel loved. how foolish.

that is not love. love is being accepted for who you are. love is taking care of yourself and caring for others and dreaming out loud when it matters. not chasing rainbows. not hoping for some eventual collective sigh of approval which will never come. how did i ever think in those terms? i always knew better. thank goodness i know now how to be honest with myself.

anyway, enjoy these shows ( i will enjoy them immensely and i will miss them just as much) and know that i am not abandoning anyone, not the cardinals and not the fans, this is just something i need to do now, and that i loved playing music in the cardinals and hell, even before i was in a place to try and learn to be well, music was my life source- and cardinals was such a heavy crush and a real dream…i honor it too much to have any regrets right now, i am just proud.

maybe we will play again sometime and maybe i will work my way back into some kind of music situation but this is the time for me to step back now, to reel it in and i wish everyone peace and happiness and if music is your dream, or if just dreaming is your dream, may you find your way through the rough patch with ease and i hope you let go and it takes you all the way there-

Nice version of Sink Ships from the back of a cab that apparently only drove in a straight line because Ryan gets car sick.

It's amazing that a London cabbie had to travel all the way to Nashville, Tennessee to hear about us. But that's what happened with Jason Brown, our cabbie for this Session. A keen music fan, he went over there for an event and heard a talk from BBC2 radio DJ Bob Harris who apparently mentioned what we're up to. Jason loved the idea, and on his return looked us up and offered his services for a Session. What is more, he just so happened to be a pretty big Ryan Adams fan. Perfect. There was a slight concern at the start of the Session though: Ryan gets car sick. Ryan's manager warned us of this and asked that, as much as possible, we drive in a straight line. It's definitely one of the stranger requests that Jason's ever had, but he did his best while in the back Ryan manfully rose above the nausea to sing his heart out. Hope you enjoy it - Jason certainly did.

Ryan’s Songwriting.

DRA is a masterful songwriter. Even if you don’t like his style of music, he is without doubt one of the greatest contemporary songwriters. I could say the same about many others, but since this is a DRA board, he’ll be the center. And I’m not going to do anything as cliché as comparing him to this songwriter or another, because for starters, everyone already knows those, and second, none of them are that accurate. I’ve heard him compared to people so diverse that it gets a little absurd—not that his skill isn’t that diverse, but the people to whom he compared are just as much so, and so comparisons are a bit redundant. Let’s just say he’s great, okay? Okay.

Now, as a songwriter, one of the ways I decide who I admire is when someone says something in a way that I wish I had come up with. Take, for example, lines from “Crossed-Out Name:” ‘I kiss her mouth and I know/For everything there is a word, everything but this.’ Seriously. There are so many ways to express the schmaltzy sentiment of, “No words can describe how I feel, etc.,” but he puts it so simply that it’s exquisite. It’s not over-the-top, it’s not even remarkably lyrical, but its simplicity is amazing. Or take a line from “Let It Ride:” ‘Tennessee’s a brother to my sister Carolina . . .” The first time I heard that I couldn’t believe my ears. Again, it’s not reinventing the wheel, and the same thing’s been said a million different ways, but he manages to put his finger on it in a way that is so effortless that it’s striking.

Another strength of his writing is in how evocative he can be with just a few words. “Twenty seven years of nothing but failures and promises that I couldn’t keep.” “We married young, stayed where we came from, and gave those children everything we had.” Or the entirety of songs like “Thank You Louise,” and the often discussed “Carolina Rain.” Within the economy of language and words in these verses is a story that anyone can sort of piece together in their own way. We get a sense of the narrator (and his perception of himself) in “Let It Ride,” in around a dozen words, and if the song had no other words, we’d still know who he was. We understand the breadth of life that the man has had with his wife in “In My Time of Need,” without really knowing what has happened—and in fact we probably have people in our own lives of whom that line or even the whole song could be true. And he gives us just enough dots to connect and make a story about Louise, Caroline &/or Rose, and any number of characters that exist in the world that he crafts, whether it’s a large, devouring city, or a small town that’s barely as wide as the police station is tall. Whichever the case, it doesn’t take DRA many words to give us a picture worth a thousand of them, and a story that is ever-changing in the imagination of the listener.

For me, one of the more endearing aspects of the way DRA writes is how conversational or colloquial he can be. Certainly, his songs have a lyrical quality to them, with good images and word play and all of those things you learn about in high school that make for good writing. But what stands out the most is the deftness with which DRA throws in phrases and words that are (or at least could be) part of someone’s everyday conversation. Take lines from “English Girls,” “Halloween,” or “Suspicion”—and not really the whole songs, but just flourishes that almost come off as after-thoughts. “You said you didn’t love me, it was right on time, I was just about to tell you, but okay, alright.” It doesn’t even sound like a song lyric, it sounds like one side of an amusing conversation, or a guy recalling a memory to a lover after the fact, with a sense of humor about things, and with his tongue placed firmly in his cheek. “Suspicion,” is, as I stated in a previous thread, so understated that you almost forget about it. But it’s elegant in the way that it sounds like two people sharing both the pain they caused each other and the pain that they’ve felt from others, and the way that DRA urges the person to move on and “Get used to it, kid.” It’s a conversation being had. My favorite part in “Halloween” is at the end of two lines in the last verse where he ends each phrase dismissively: “Well, okay. . . .Whatever.” It’s hard to use a phrase popularized by a movie popularized by Alecia Silverstone in the late 90’s in a song and not have it sound completely stupid. But he does it, and it’s artful, and it even makes me laugh.

What makes a great songwriter great and makes their songs feel timeless and appealing to a lot of people is how accessible the things they write are. Take a song like, “Crazy,” by Willie Nelson (I know Patsy Cline made it famous, but Nelson wrote it), or “Gulf Coast Highway,” by Nancy Griffith. These are songs that are at once specific enough to tell a story, but vague enough to remind each of us about someone different. The lover in “Crazy” isn’t going on and on about the details of the failed relationship (like so many Dashboard Confessional songs) or pouring out syrupy confessions of unrequited love (like “Every Rose Has a Thorn” or “The Reason is You”). “Crazy” is about the elemental part of romance and heartbreak, that anyone can understand, not just the self-indulgent few of us who’ve made a million dollars, wasted it on blow, and been dumped by exotic dancers from payphones while we were on tour. “Gulf Coast Highway” is about two people, for sure, but they are archetypes, not stereotypes. We provide their faces and their names, and we provide most of the story ourselves. That’s why I, a 26 year old guy from the South, can love the songs as much as a 59 year old woman from California.

And this is why DRA is such an effective songwriter. He certainly writes his share of intensely personal songs, but they never cross the border into self-indulgent, heart-on-his-sleeve self-pity. His most personal songs feel like the shy confessions of someone who’d just assume you leave him alone, but is relieved to get it off his chest. But by and large, his songs feel more like Everyman. You don’t have to be a lonely high school kid who’s just had his first taste of heartbreak and thinks that the world is going to end (Screaming Infidelities). You don’t have to be a 20-something woman angry at a bad boyfriend (Goodbye Earl). You certainly can be, of course, but a good songwriter doesn’t demand that you be his or her clone to understand where they are coming from, whereas some songwriters are so insistent on you being like them that if you’re not, you’re almost shut out completely (and better for it, really).

And DRA doesn’t demand that of his audience. He just opens the window so you can hear his ramblings if you happen to be passing by. His personal experiences feel like something anyone could have seen or heard or felt. His towns and people, even when they are named, are just cardboard facades that hide the towns we all grew up in and the faces of people we all grew up with.

If Ryan Adams had his way, he would have preferred to have his own name off of his recent album 'Cardinology,' and just have it say 'The Cardinals,' the moniker of his current group. He even suggested taking a Sharpie and crossing off 'Ryan Adams' on the spine of the album. "[Lost Highway, our record label] could not get it through their heads," Adams says at the band's Sessions taping, "that we were just the Cardinals, and that it was probably a bad idea to keep my name in front of it. But this has been going on for four albums."

His adamant feeling about is are indicative of the strong band vibe within the Cardinals, which includes pedal steel guitarist Jon Graboff, guitarist Neal Casal, bassist Chris Feinstein and drummer Brad Pemberton. The whole Cardinal clan flocked to our Sessions studio to perform some cuts from 'Cardinology' and to talk about the album, their working relationship and making homemade monster movies while on the road.

The reviews for 'Cardinology' have been very positive.

Ryan: I myself don't look at them. I don't read rock journalism because it's usually rock journalists are like the bottom of the bottom-of-the barrel writers. They're almost scumbags. When we walk away from the records I think all of us, at least for me, I know what we do in the room and that day is more important to me than the perception after.

Do you have any theme in mind when making a record?

Ryan: Well, no. This record is a Cardinals album. What people imagine my job is and what it really is in the band are actually two very different things. My job is to just be creative and that's it. I sit at home [and] I don't do anything different than what I've ever done. In fact, I actually have more time just sort of make these half-assed demos. Then I pass them on to these guys and these guys find things that they like. We'll sort of work on these ideas and the music will come around. And then when it's time for [them] to really be written. Then from a list of 30 or 40 comes a list of 20 and then I sit down and I really finish those words if I can.

And then I leave the studio as much as I can ... so I come up with some jam ideas because I like to spaz out on some bad guitars and I hand it to you guys and we have fun. Plus, I'm like really highly volatile right now because I'm 33 and I'm going to die alone. The woman I love decided to be with someone else, so f--- me.

The last song on the album, 'Stop,' is very moving. Talk about that track.

Ryan: I just kind of squeezed it out at the last minute. It just fell out. It was actually a completely different song. Then this woman I loved is never going to love me back because I screwed it up. One minute I had it and we could have fixed it but I didn't fix it. Anyway, [the song] seems like it could be about addiction issues, but to me it's actually about something entirely different.

Jon: The way it was made was different than any other song on the record. That was really the only song on the record, which Ryan sang, played on the piano and then basically left and said, "See what you guys can do with it." We just kind of thought about it and said, "Let's take this part out, lets add this part here," and it was really interesting. I think we did a really good job on that one.

Even though Ryan's name is front and center on the album cover, there definitely seems to be a band vibe throughout the record.

Ryan: We've been a band since [2005's] 'Cold Roses' but for some reason we just couldn't get anyone to understand that. I really don't want to make a record under "Ryan Adams." Hearing my own name makes me want to take a dagger and like literally shove it so f---ing hard into my stomach until I'm dead that I just can't f---ing stand it. I just want to be in the band that I'm in and I just want to go home and be alone for the rest of my f---ng life and die under a big stack of comics and let roaches eat my f---ing eyes out of my skull because that's how it is. But it's cool.

Jon: That being said ...

Ryan: I've had this [Cardinals] dream for a long time ... and it's shared by four of my best friends. That's really intense and we carry it everyday, we carry it all over the place and it works. It's just going to be good to get past this area where it has to have something to do with me because I'm just f---ing tired of my s--- and I just want to make some tunes.

What do the Cardinals do on the road?

Jon: Panty raids. [laughs] I'm only kidding, of course ... chess.

Ryan: Brad and Jon play chess a lot, Neal sits in his bunk and stares at the top [laughs], and chills out and watches surf movies.

Neal: We're all friends, we hang out and do stuff together. It's not just something where we just work.

You guys also make homemade monster movies? Tell us about them.

Ryan: We just hit up a Super K in the middle of the night [and] get the bus driver to stop. We get a couple of masks and then we're off in the middle of nowhere. We just go out in the parking lot and like come up with a dumb thing. I'll have my camera out and there will be almost no dialogue but there will be a lot of plastic swordplay, and maybe some gunplay if we can find guns.

Chris: Its fun to watch the locals watch it happen.

Ryan, you've been in the media spotlight for the last couple of years. What is your opinion about how the media covers you?

Ryan: Do you have a phone number or an address for the Media? I don't believe in things like the media or the corporation because that doesn't exist. If you broke apart that idea what you would find is thousands of individuals who have broken hearts, who have something wonderful to say, who have stories, and that's what I'm interested in.

Are you thinking about the next album?

Neal: Yeah we're thinking about it alright, there's already new songs for it. We already have a song, like song 1, of the next journey.

Ryan: I always get so excited about making the next ... I'm like an over excited ... you know like people who bake, they make baked goods -- I get so excited just to get up and get in the kitchen. Just the kitchen smells and what we're going to put in it this time. That's my favorite thing. By the time we get to the lyrics, I'm usually pretty worn out because it's usually going to be the same thing: "She's going to stay with him, it's never going to f---ing happen and I'm going to die alone." That's the way it's going to be.

All tracks are soundboard sourced and my favourite live versions. I made simple fade ins and outs and volume adjustments with Audacity. I also edited Maps a little bit to take out one of Ryans mistakes before the first verse. An uncut version of Maps is also included and since I couldn't pick one version of Lighthouses I included two very different ones.

Stand-outs in my opinion are "Magnolia Mountain," "I See Monsters," "New York, New York," and "Anybody Wanna Take Me Home." "Magnolia" and "Anybody" just sound great live, I'd love to hear those more. "New York, New York" is full of jams, and the chorus is just funny. "I See Monsters" is so fucking raw and in your face. How does anyone get lucky enough to go to a show like this?

I was fortunate enough to see The Cards' open up for Oasis last night in Rosemont (Chicago), IL from the 12th row. They were sounding tight, sadly they are really held back opening up for Oasis. No banter, just straight up tunes for an hour. Ryan's voice sounded great and he seemed to be enjoying himself. He was way into the Off Broadway jam and Natural Ghost was one of the best I have heard. Here are some pictures, nothing special though, the lighting sucked and the camera I was using is not pro grade. Still cool, check em out.

Hello fellow Halloweenheads. It's only appropriate for my first post on this Ryan Adams shrine to be the first Cardinals (or Ryan Adams) concert I ever attended. The good ol' Bijou Theatre. What a place. About an 800 seat venue, Ryan went on stage late and left pissed off. But in between, he put on one killer fucking show.

Standout's are "The End" (more specifically the mid-song rant about Batman and libraries during the second verse), "Blue Hotel," and "What Sin." Personally, I just enjoy this version of "Blue Hotel" ten times more than on the recorded version, but music is always ten times better live. And "What Sin" is just so fucking raw and intense. And how often do you get to see him cover the Dead AND Gram Parsons in one show? But overall, the entire show kicked ass. He has a good "fuck Lost Highway" moment at the end, and little Ms. Popper awkwardly apologized (I miss her a lot). Anyways, through all the outbursts and awkward moments, I feel very fortunate to have attended this show. I got to see a very rare form of the Cardinals.

Infinity Blues, Signed!

Man did Christmas come early this year! Ryan Adam's new book, Infinity Blues, arrived on my doorstep today. Just in time as the weather turns briskly cold and white flakes start to dance their way towards the concrete-like ground, I now have every reason to stay inside and curl up to this gem of a book. As if having 286 pages of Ryan's forever captivating mind in my hand wasn't enough, his authentic signature signed in black ink graces the cover page. Consistent with the mystery of the greatest singer-songwriter since Neil Young, there is a line with a circle dangling from the U, and I suppose only Mr. Adams knows the meaning of this, but I thought I would post this in hope of receiving some interpretations. Please check back often as this blog has just begun.........................LET IT RIDE
